Looking Back In Recent Times

Looking Back In Recent Times   In response to Jill Ball's request for Accentuate the Positive Geneameme 2021 an annual reflection...so here is my attempt. 1. I got the most joy from: Researching Family History.  This has always been my passion, since I was set a task to make my family tree the first year in secondary school. I absolutely panicked, with a German father I was so concerned as I knew so little. On the other hand my mother's family wasn't so unknown.  My maternal grandmother came to my rescue with booklets that she had purchased on her visits to Tasmania, where her father was born. I hadn't realised that his father had been a convict. WoW!!! From that moment I was 'hooked'... This was way, way, way, before the Internet and even microfiche readers were available.. It was index cards, like what the libraries used for their book catalogues.  Modern 21st Century Tools at Launceston Library in May 2021 I remember the first time I went researching, finger...

When Is A Birth Certificate Not A Birth Certificate???

Image
The  genealogical certificate  (Abstammungsurkunde) was a 'civil status' document made under German law.  It was created to prove the birth of a child and it differed (ever so slightly) from a actual Birth Certificate. It's main purpose (of the genealogical certificate) was to determine marriage bans with adopted children. This became just another example of excess paperwork, and the genealogical certificate was abolished in Germany on the 1 January, 2009 by the 'Civil Status Law Reform Act'. So. Genealogical certificates were issued up until the 31 December, 2008 by the civil registry office that had certified the birth. Contained on the certificate, amongst other things, was the name of the child, the child's sex, date of birth, place of birth, and the parents' names. Also contained on the certificate were any changes listed  that may have occurred since the birth of the child, for example, the adoption of the child and/or any name changes. Genealog...

How A Young Man From War-Torn Germany Found His Utopia On The Other Side Of The World Part Three

Image
" It's been a long while till I'll see you again... " these words were hauntingly beautiful when I heard them today and I sadly remembered that on this day eleven years ago...my father passed away, suddenly. There were no goodbyes, in an instant he was on his next journey, without me. We had shared a unique experience back in 1975/76 when we visited the area of his birth Bamberg , Germany. ( Discussed in Part One ). He shared with me, then, a lot of his experiences as a young boy growing up in Bamberg , Germany. However, part of his story, that he didn't share with me, has been the nature of my research for the past two years. It's taken a while, because of my health and the lack of information that I've been able to find. But today, I think it's time to tell the rest of what I've found...if you missed the second part, or need to refresh your memory... here it is Once Arno arrived and had cleared all the immigration details in Fremantle, ...

JOHN FRANCIS WALSH - GALLIPOLI 100 YEARS ON... I first became aware of the Three Young Men from Charters Towers, whilst doing research  (2002-2015) on Samuel William HARRY whose life was detailed in 2015. You may read Samuel's story  here . Hugh Quinn the second (who had Quinns Post named after him) had his story told here ...these two men were mates in Charters Towers, Queensland. They had many common interests too. But, there was also a third young man, whose name was John Francis Walsh. One of the main reasons for doing John's story last, was that I truly believed that it would be difficult to tell his story. But, I was so, so wrong. MAJOR JOHN FRANCIS WALSH John Francis Walsh was the third son of John Walsh and Ellen Buckley born 1 February 1890 in Charters Towers. He had three brothers, Edward Peter, Robert Joseph, William John and an elder sister Mary Catherine Walsh. John was educated at the Boys' Central State School, Charters Towers and ...
